Complimentary South African Wine Tasting Event

The Wines Available to Taste

Deimersfontein Pinotage: known as the original Coffee / Chocolate Pinotage. This wine spearheaded what is now an emerging category in South Africa. It is one of our favorites with its older sister, the 2007, winning The People’s Choice at the Durban.

Deimersfontein Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: intense black current, followed by the slight mint and dried laurel with light cloves on the exit. On the palate a mixed plum and red fruit, added spice and finishes with dark chocolate and herb.

Deimersfontein Shiraz
: on the nose morello cherries and mulberry mix, with cloves, white pepper and a hint of pencil shavings . Palate is round and complex, spicy finish, lingering acidity backed by firm tannins.

Raka Biography Shiraz: a wonderfully smooth and silky shiraz. This beautiful wine has big nose of smokey oak and fruitcake with subtle hints of white pepper. Its elegance shows excellent balance between berry fruit and spice, with a touch of sweet vanilla on the finish.

Raka Quinary: the 2005 Quinary is an elegant, complex and sophisticated Bordeaux blend. One critic refers to the process of blending Bordeaux as ‘Painting with Flavor’. That is exactly what wine maker Josef Dreyer has done in creating this materpiece.

Ridgeback Viognier: an incredibly well layered white with tropical bursting flavors and fatness. A delightful, more intriguing alternative to a Chardonnay, this is not a wine for casual consumption but one you find commands your attention with every sip.

This event will take place at Venue Restaurant on November 22 from 3 – 6pm.

African Woodsmoke Evening – San Diego

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Woodsmoke had its third African Woodsmoke evening at Charles and Kelly Austin’s house in Bonsall, California.  This was the first evening that had been held at a home and it turned out to be a huge success on all accounts.  The setting was perfect since the Austin’s have a great area to entertain outdoors.  They have a beautiful outdoor area and that is where the whole evening was spent which blends itself well to Africa since you are always outdoors in Africa.

The weather was typical for a San Diego evening – 72 degrees and cloudless.  This event was fully catered serving African continental food that consisted of baby back ribs, sosati’s (chicken kebobs), and an African salad.  Eric & Kara from Cape Ardor were able to come down and help out with the wine tasting and did a phenomenal job.  Cape Ardor specializes in importing boutique wines from South Africa that are new to the American market.  The wine of choice for the evening was Diemersfontein Pinotage.  This is an award winning South African wine that has a smokey nose, and chocolate / coffee taste to it – extremely unique and one of the best wines coming out of South Africa.  It converts, befriends, and seduces you after the first sip.

Woodsmoke wants to thank Charles & Kelly Austin for making the African Woodsmoke evening possible.  Kelly & Megan worked all week to get the everything looking perfect and they did an amazing job.  Sean tried to add his two cents but does not possess any natural talents in terms of creating displays.  We would also like to thank Eric & Kara for coming down and doing such a great job.

Here are some pictures to enjoy from the evening.

Pictures of Woodsmoke Evening

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Woodsmoke had its second African evening at Venue Restaurant on June 22.  It turned out to be an extremely successful event on all accounts.  Venue has a great room that we used for the evening and it went very well with the Woodsmoke brand since the room had dim lighting, dark interiors, and a social ambiance to it.

For the first time we did a wine tasting of a few South African wines that come from boutique vineyards where they only make a few hundred cases a year.  We served Diemersfontein Pinotage that was sponsored to us by Cape Ardor and did tastings with Raka Shiraz, La Petite Ferme Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Ridgeback Merlot that were all superb .  The Diemersfontein went down extremely well and I was told a number of times that it had a very smokey nose and had great chocolate / coffee notes to it.  There were a few women who were constantly speaking about the wine and definitely enjoyed having a few glasses.

The most important thing to Woodsmoke is to showcase the artists who make our products.  I feel as if we let you know this and it resonated with everyone that came to the evening.  The story behind the product is the second most important thing to us and that is why you can find detailed information about all our products on our website.

Thank you very much for supporting Woodsmoke and coming out to the Venue.  Sign up for our newsletter to find out more information about the next Woodsmoke Evening.

I leave you with a few pics from the evening.

AFRICAN WOODSMOKE EVENING

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Woodsmoke is having its second African Evening at Venue Restaurant in Lincoln, NE on June 22nd from 6pm to 10pm.  This evening will be similar to the first Woodsmoke Evening but grander on many terms.  To start off with, we will be having an array of top-class, exclusive South African wines to sample from Cape Ardor.  Venue restaurant has been kind enough to offer food pairings that will go along with the biographies of the wines.

Woodsmoke has also been working with new upcoming artists from all over Africa and have a wider range of very interesting, hand-made products.  We are promoting a South African band here in the States called Goldfish.  Goldfish music will be playing throughout the evening and will be for purchase at the evening.  We will also be offering many African Coffee table books that will be available for purchase.

Come and enjoy the evening.  Forward this message to anyone who has an interest in South African wine, African Art, or experiencing the culture of Africa.
