Zulu Herb Baskets
6.5″ tall x 4.8″ wide
Originally used for storage of dried herbs and medicinal ingredients by the Zulu people of South Africa. The women weave the baskets out of Ilala palm which is an indigenous grass from South Africa. The Ilala palm is first cooked in a pot with many African herbs to bring out the different colors in the palms. The Zulu’s use many natural dyes to create the different colors on the baskets. Traditional communities in KwaZulu-Natal can weave baskets of such fine quality that they are waterproof enough to hold beer and other fluids.
